We will show a life-stage estimate and explain which boundary was used. No dog-to-human multiplier is applied.
Life stage is more useful than a fake human-age number
AAHA describes puppy, young adult, mature adult, and senior stages. Puppyhood ends around 6–9 months, physical and social maturation around 3–4 years, and the senior stage begins in the final 25% of estimated lifespan. Exact timing varies by breed, size, lifestyle, and health.
Adult size selects only the puppy and young-adult boundaries. A senior threshold is calculated only when you provide a reliable breed-specific expected lifespan; otherwise the tool leaves that boundary unresolved instead of inventing a number.

Frequently asked questions
Why does this calculator not multiply dog years by seven?
Dogs mature and age at different rates. AAHA recommends using life stage, age, size, breed, lifestyle, and health rather than one universal human-age conversion.
Is the result a veterinary diagnosis?
No. It is a planning estimate based on age, adult size, and any expected lifespan you choose to provide. Your veterinary team can refine it using breed, medical history, body condition, and current health.
Why can a small and giant dog of the same age get different results?
Growth and expected lifespan vary with adult size. The calculator uses different boundaries within the ranges described by AAHA and labels the result as an estimate.
